Your First Project
Learn how to create a project and organize your construction documents.
What is a Project?
A project in BuildVision represents a single construction job. It contains:
- Plans & Documents - blueprints, specs, contracts
- Takeoffs - your measurements and quantities
- Quotes - estimates you create for the job
- Team Members - people assigned to work on it
- Budget & Invoices - financial tracking
Creating Your First Project
Click New Project
From the dashboard, click the + New Project button in the top right.
Enter Basic Information

| Client Name | Who you're working for | "John & Jane Smith" |
| Start Date | When work begins | "March 15, 2024" |
| Budget | Estimated total cost | "$45,000" |
Only the project name is required. You can add other details later.
Set the Project Status
Choose where this project is in your pipeline:

|---|---|
| Planning | Still in bidding/estimation phase |
| Active | Work has started |
| On Hold | Temporarily paused |
| Completed | Job is finished |
Add Team Members (Optional)
If you want others to access this project:
- Click Add Team Members
- Select people from your team
- They'll see this project in their dashboard
Click Create
Your project is now ready. You'll be taken to the project dashboard.
Uploading Plans
Now add your construction documents.
Go to Documents
In your project, click the Documents tab.
Upload Files
You can upload in three ways:
- Drag and drop files directly onto the page
- Click Upload and select files
- Email plans to your project email address (found in settings)
Supported File Types
| Type | Best For |
|---|---|
| Blueprints, specs, contracts - recommended for takeoffs | |
| DWG/DXF | CAD files - converted to PDF automatically |
| Images | PNG, JPG, TIFF - photos and scanned plans |
| Documents | Word, Excel - specs and schedules |
Pro tip: Multi-page PDFs are automatically split into individual sheets. Each page becomes a separate plan you can measure.
Organize Your Documents
After upload, organize files by:
- Renaming - Click the document name to edit
- Categorizing - Set document type (Plans, Specs, Contracts, etc.)
- Archiving - Hide old revisions without deleting
Starting a Takeoff
Ready to measure your plans?
- Click on any uploaded plan document
- Select Open in Takeoff
- The plan opens in the measurement workspace

Your project dashboard shows everything at a glance:
